The purpose of this blog is to document the sketch comedy writing process that I will participate in from July 19th to August 7 at The People's Improv Theater, (The PIT).
"Would you be interested in being a substitute teacher?" This was the question that started my teaching career. Since I was looking for part-time work after the birth of my daughter, it was also the answer. I took the part-time job at a school for students with language-based learning differences. My quest to find strategies to teach gifted learners with disabilities, in ways other than remediation, took me back to school to earn a BA in Psychology and a Masters in Special Education.
The fact that winning my CTG-Chase Educators Fellowship takes me to the heart of New York City is fitting, because many years ago I arrived in this very city as a young actress in search of fame and fortune...I found neither, but I did learn that life was difficult if you didn't have an arsenal of self-awareness, self-acceptance, healthy self-criticism and self-advocacy. After eight years of struggling to make a mark in the theater world, I won $20,000 on a game show that moved me to LA and a new life as a teacher of Twice-exceptional learners.
